‘Time management key to success’
Actor Yami Gautam on her preference for steel watches and her favourite co-actors
Hi Yami, do you like watches, are you a watch person?
I’m very much a watch person. Right from school, I was one of those few students who used to wear those thin leather strapped watches and for me it was all about time. That’s something me and my sister have had enormous fights about because I used to drag her out of home fifteen minutes even before the school bus could arrive because “It’s Eight Thirty.” That’s the memory I have, actually more than me, it’s my sister who has the memory of us going to school together. So, I think right from schooling till date I think I’m very particular about time.
So, what kind of watches do you like? Do you have a huge collection of watches, how many do you have?
I love watches with big dials. I have a thin wrist, but, I love watches with big dials. And I love experimenting, I even have watches that enable me to change the straps, may be the colours. I like steel watches a lot. I like watches that are classy and beautiful and at the same time I also love sports watches. Yes, I do have a good collection of watches.
Apart from shoots, what do you usually like to do in your free time? If you’ve got a day off how do you spend your time?
If it’s a day off I like to sleep. I love to sleep or if my family is around or if I’m in Chandigarh, then endless gossip sessions which is not filmy. I’m a typical Pahadi Punjabi in that regard. I like doing gardening or cooking up dishes.
We also came across a couple of your posts that show that you’ve lately started baking a lot.
Yes, haha, I love eating, I’m a big foodie but at the same time you have to be a little conscious about your little calorie intake or what is healthy or not. So, from that perspective I just thought I’d started exploring some stuff and how can I make it a bit more “eatable” than I would usually not care.
You’ve also worked on a lot of movies in different languages like Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Punjabi. Which have been the most challenging?
Hindi! Because that’s where you’re judged the most (Laughs). No, I think all of them really. Obviously, it’s very difficult to emote in a language which you don’t know and I’m not somebody who would depend on any kind of cue or any other way apart from mugging the lines, so that was very difficult. But, I’ve had fun; I think there’s always something new to learn.
What is your idea of time management?
I think it’s very important to manage your time. If you cannot manage your time, I don’t think you can succeed in this industry. Whether it’s you managing it or somebody as good as you who can really take care of it. But, I think it’s really important to chalk out your day’s schedules. It just makes life easier not just for you but also for people around you. I don’t like people waiting for me. I don’t think it’s fair. And I think as much as I can make best use of time.
Of all the movies you’ve done, who has been your favourite co-star to spend time with?
Wow, I have a big answer for that. All of them! I’m working on two movies with Pulkit, we had a really good time while shooting. We’ve shot on the toughest locations where we wouldn’t even get to talk to each other because we’re all stuck in those monkey caps. I had a great time shooting with Varun as well. I think it was a short journey but whatever time I’ve spent, I think he’s also someone who’s really passionate about his work. Badlapur was a very special film; it was a very different film.
Are you excited about Watch World Awards? What are you looking forward to tonight?
I love gifts and because I love watches I’m looking forward to see who is the best of the best; in the watch industry. I think the standard is very international, it’s very high and I’m sure they’re going to surprise us with unique designs blended with contemporary and unique features, looking stylish and edgy as always.
