The International Watchmaking Museum located at La Chaux-de-Fonds provides an impressive history of the measurement of time – By Hiren Kumar Bose
We had stolen a day from the hectic Basel show and planned our visit to the Ebel Manufacture at La Chaux-de- Fonds at the insistence of a friend 오토캐드 2018 한글 다운로드. Alix had asked us to be at Lausanne by 8am from where she would drive us to Ebel. An hour-long drive brought us to La Chaux-de-Fonds in the canton of Neuchatel at the western tip of Switzerland, close to the French border King of Fighters 2002.
As the car drove us into the town – considered a part of Switzerland Tourism’s ‘watch valley’ tour – we noticed that it hardly had medieval buildings unlike other Swiss towns 족구왕 다운로드. Alix informed us that the town was entirely destroyed by a major fire in 1794 and was rebuilt on a chessboard design by Charles-Henri Junod in imitation of American towns, which is unusual for Switzerland Katia Drawings.
Regarded as the birthplace of watch-making worldwide with names like Cartier, Girard-Perregaux , TAG Heuer, Corum, Breitling, Ebel, Juvenia, the Marathon Watch Company, Movado, Ulysse Nardin, Invicta, Gallet and others, the town’s economy is based on the watch industry and watch manufacturers Ildori.
Swiss watchmaking started in the 16th century in the city of Geneva, developing over the years. More than one hundred clock and watchmakers were recorded as working in this city in 1686 and their overall production amounted to five thousand watches per annum nuke 10. At the same time, watchmaking also developed in various other places in the Jura mountain area, notably in the towns and cities of Neuchatel, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Le Locle, Fleurier and Travers Fukuoka.
The largest centre of watchmaking was Geneva, where in 1869 seven thousand skilled workers were involved in the horological industry. Active workshops in other towns also produced chronometers, precision watches and ordinary watches 장난스런 키스 다운로드. The Canton of Vaud in the Joux Valley attained skill in the production of ‘ebuaches’ (rough movements) used in the process of making highly complicated watches 할로우 아타락시아 다운로드.
The 19th and early 20th centuries saw the rise of firms which are well known even today, namely Audemars- Piguet, Patek Philippe, Girard- Perregaux, Longines, Omega, Rolex and Ebel 신무시위사 다운로드.
Like its neighbour Le Locle, La Chaux-de-Fonds too is situated in the Jura Mountains at an altitude of 1000m. The Jura ountryside is a pleasant area for walking and cycling or cross-country skiing in winter. After Geneva and Lausanne, La Chaux-de-Fonds is the third largest city in the French-speaking part of the country.
“The climate in Jura is harsh. In fact, you’re just few kilometers from the village of La Brvine in Le Locle, which is called the Siberia of Switzerland, and holds the record for the lowest temperature ever recorded in Switzerland – 41.8°,” said Alix as she stopped her car in front of a huge mound of snow at the roadside on that cold morning.
An hour and half later we emerged from Ebel to visit Villa Jeanneret- Perret, the first independent project of Charles-Edouard Jeanneret who later came to be known as Le Corbusier, the man who laid out Chandigarh. Born in 1887, Le Corbusier created a few early works in the town of his birth, including the ‘Maison Blanche’, which he built in 1912 for his parents. The ‘Ville Turque’, built in 1917, is way ahead of its time and is now a World Heritage Site and since 1987 has been used as a PR centre for the watchmakers Ebel.
