Brands are taking a stab at the smaller sizes again. Gone are the days when 43mm plus watches were the norm, writes Hiren Kumar Bose
Till very recently what happened with men’s watches was reflected in the ladies category too. It was like “we also made them to keep our women clients happy.” Not much thought was given to pamper, indulge the fairer sex. When the trend was “bigger the better” we had clocks, yes almost that big, for the ladies dainty wrist too. In fact, those were the times when you had to be told that “it’s a ladies watch, yes”.
We have seen the sizes steadily rise up to a point where a 46mm watch was the norm. Let’s admit that an ideal size for women is between 40mm to 42mm. Anything above looks unclassy and unfabulous. Fortunately things are changing now. Elegance and refinement seems to be returning, going by the ladies watches showcased at the recent edition of Basel- World.
DIOR LA MINI D DE DIOR MIROIR 19MM
La D de Dior embodies the spirit of Dior Fine Jewellery and reconciles the jeweller’s expertise of sparkling snow settings, ornamental stone dials and the creative boldness of combining materials and colours with Swiss watchmaking know-how, including the mechanical Elite movement by Zenith manufacture for some models. The La D de Dior collection pays tribute to Christian Dior’s passion for colour and takes its inspiration from Victoire de Castellane’s taste for contrast, found in Dior jewellery. After the flashy straps for last summer edition, once again Dior reinterprets the famous watch in a more refined version, adding leather belts with a mirror effect declined in the three colours of gold: pink, white and yellow. Besides the presence of these original straps, the watch in question is equipped with quartz movement, 19mm stainless steel case, bezel and crown set with diamonds, anti-reflective sapphire crystal glass.
PIAGET ALTIPLANO SKELETON 38MM
Pursuing its quest for essentials, the Altiplano collection developed by the Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Piaget is the ultimate expression of formal purity. This reality is now taking on a new dimension with the Piaget Altiplano Skeleton Ultra-Thin model boasting a double world record: the world’s thinnest selfwinding skeleton model (5.34mm) houses the world’s thinnest self-winding skeleton movement (2.40mm). It has taken no less than half a century of expertise in ultra-thin mechanical movements to reach these new peaks of achievement. What if all that were left at the end of the day were the hand of the artist and the horological absolute? In this quest for essentials symbolised by the Altiplano collection, the Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Piaget takes a new leap forward by presenting the Piaget Altiplano Skeleton Ultra-Thin. This resolutely modern and truly exceptional watch not only reveals Piaget’s unique know-how in the field of ultra-thin mechanical movements, but also highlights the skills of the engraving artisans who have constantly pushed the boundaries in this art of extremes in order to make Piaget the specialist of skeleton or open-worked movements in the domain of fine watchmaking.
LOUIS VUITTON EMPRISE 23MM
The Emprise watch is the quintessence of the collection’s Parisian spirit, graphic and delicate. The horns holding the wrist-strap are emphasised by motifs derived from trunk cornerpieces, while the square, symmetrical case is enlivened by reflections in the double-bevelled glass and the sparkle of diamonds. The bracelet is sheathed in satin or in leather embossed with a grosgrain ribbon pattern, two stylistic tributes to the world of fashion. On gold models, the powdered tones of the dial reflect the sensuality of the padding that protects the inside of the trunks.
