The launches at Baselworld and SIHH seem to get bigger and bigger. Amidst all the hype and hoopla of movie stars and celebrities, marketing blitz and PR exercise (thank God), the mainstay still remains the watches. They come in different shapes, sizes, colours and, above all, prices. While admiring them all, we must realize that they operate in different spaces. Showcase 2006 presents 34 outstanding watches in six groups. Many of these may overlap between the groups. However, we have tried to keep it simple by classifying them in groups where they fit the best. Go ahead and choose your favourites.

ART

art is an investment, so is a good watch. And a good watch with a touch of art is priceless. Increasingly, the high-end watchmakers are incorporating art to enhance their appeal to true watch connoisseurs. However, to marry the skills of watch-making and art is a hugely difficult task and hence most of the artistic watches are limited in nature.

JAEGER-LECOULTRE Reverso a eclipses

In this year of celebrations dedicated to its legendary reversible watch, JAEGER-LECOULTRE has marshaled all its technical and artistic savoir-faire in order to produce the Reverso a eclipses which contains a ‘secret’ enamel masterpiece in a Grande Reverso case. A timepiece of this kind, which allies precise time measurement with playful visual ingenuity, offers the purest expression imaginable of the watchmaker’s art that demands a complete mastery of the mysteries of miniaturisation. The idea of the ‘eclipse’, which allows the user to conceal or reveal a design on the watch’s dial at will, was first explored by the manufacture in 1910 when it produced a pocket watch endowed with just such a mechanism. On that occasion, however, the technique was applied to a much larger timepiece. With the new, far smaller Reverso a eclipses, all it takes is a simple movement of the finger and the curtains of this magical horological theatre part to reveal an enamel miniature. This precious marvel of a timepiece comes in platinum or 18-carat pink gold, and four different themes are available: Voyages of discovery, Chinesesigns of the zodiac, famous nudes and ‘Grand fev’.
