Varuna D. Jani’s designs set the tone for the independent, modern woman
She has ‘jewels’ in her genes. Belonging to the third generation of Popley Jewellers, Varuna D. Jani is the daughter of Ramchand Popley who is one of the few jewellers to receive the President’s Award.
“My initiation into the domain of jewellery began very early when I accompanied my father to several jewellery exhibitions and in fact started interacting with customers at the sales counter of our family shop in Bandra when I was just about eight or ten,’’ recalls the designer, who shifted to Dubai with her husband after getting married at 18, and took a break for a few years.
“Though I was away from our family business, my love affair with the world of jewels continued even in Dubai where I never missed a single exhibition. While touring other countries, imbibing business, the jewellery scene of that country was my priority,’’ says Varuna, who in January this year launched her own boutique in Bandra with her brand ‘Varuna D. Jani’.
It was her father’s illness that brought her back to Mumbai in 2005 to man the business, along with her brother. “That
was the time I began overhauling the design section and the workforce in our as I was aware of what is needed by the present day working women.”
Known in the couture circle as the Queen of Diamonds, Varuna, says, “Indian traditional design market is changing to accommodate trendy jewellery. When I design, I try to understand my customer’s lifestyle and nature, and then offer designs to suit her personality. Jewellery is like clothes. One should wear what suits and not what is trendy. My jewellery sets the tone for independent women.”
The World Gold Council has now collaborated with Varuna, the winner of the Women Super Achiever award by a global jury of Asia Retail Congress 2009, in promoting her VOW line in India and abroad. The pieces in this line are unique, as they conceal an intricate and efficient link adjustment system in the interwoven shape, allowing the same neckpiece to offer multiple options for varied occasions. The same jewellery piece can be converted into a simple pendant or a heavy one, depending on the occasion.
Besides this, she has a Luxury Collection, an Heirloom Ensemble Collection for special occasions and for special people and a Daily Glam Selection for everyday wear.
“Anything beautiful inspires me. I translate that beauty into designs on my jewellery,’’ says the designer.
