Sets Sail On Alinghi Yet Again
After its commitments to Alinghi in 2009 and 2010 in the 33rd America’s Cup, Hublot is now renewing its partnership with the Swiss team in its big international challenges. The Swiss watchmaking brand has announced its presence on board the two monotype series boats chosen by Alinghi for the 2012 season: the Extreme 40 and the Décision 35. The former will take to the open waters around the world in the highly rarefied Extreme 40 international circuit. The second boat – the Décision 35 Alinghi – will be in action on Lake Geneva. To mark the occasion, Jean-Claude Biver recently unveiled the King Power Alinghi 4000 dive watch, limited to just 100 numbered pieces. This new full carbon series – a material similar to that used in boat manufacture – is an extension of the first series that found dazzling success.

During the Cannes International Film Festival, the Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen hosted another glamorous evening event demonstrating its commitment to film and film-makers. The exclusive Filmmakers Dinner, which was presented in partnership with Finch’s Quarterly Review and, for the first time, Mercedes-AMG, was attended by famous personalities such as Oscar winner Robert De Niro, actor Ewan McGregor and top model Karolina Kurkova. IWC Friends of the Brand such as “Grey’s Anatomy” star Eric Dane and gallery owner Tim Jefferies were also on the high-calibre guest list. At the after party, soul singer Aloe Blacc provided the evening’s musical highlights.
“For years now we have had a passion for film and film-making. We are happy to celebrate it here in Cannes with other like-minded individuals and friends of the IWC brand,” explained Georges Kern, CEO of IWC. “Every director tells a story with his films. At IWC, storytelling is the basis or, to be more precise, part of the DNA of everything we do”
Yves ‘Jetman’ Rossy continues to push the boundaries of aviation. He has successfully completed a flight under a sunny sky over the city of Rio de Janeiro. The pioneering Yves Rossy, who is the only person to fly with a rigid wing equipped with four jet engines, dropped from a helicopter over Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, where he stabilised the wing and headed full throttle north to circumvent Corcovado. He then tracked south of the city to fly alongside Ipanema, Copacabana, and Sugarloaf Mountain, before pulling his parachute and safely landing on the infamous Copacabana beach. The total flight took 11 minutes 35 seconds, averaging altitudes of 1200metres, and no problems were reported before, during or after the flight. Yves Rossy, a former fighter pilot and Swiss Airlines captain, ensured that stringent safety measures and procedures were in place. Yves Rossy first started developing the Jetman project in 1993 and in 2008 completed the first significant Jetman feat by crossing the English Channel. In 2010 the Swiss watchmaker Breitling joined as a main sponsor and the joint venture has continued to achieve many aviation firsts. To date, Jetman, supported by Breitling, has completed aerobatics from the Breitling Orbiter balloon, flown over the Grand Canyon skies and most recently flown in formation with two L-39c Albatros Jets from the Breitling Jet team.
