IWC’s Pilot collection is in the league of the extraordinary, especially with its Top Gun Range, with its five new models

Functionality and durability without sacrificing the look! That’s what is exemplified in IWC’s Pilot Collection. These watches exude a richness that must be seen to be appreciated. The Schaffhausen-based watchmaker has reworked the entire range of Pilot’s family, having uplifted the range with more manufacturer movements and having reworked some details of the existing products.

The Top Gun range, an independent formation within the Pilot Collection, is named after the former location of the US Navy Fighter Weapons School where the myth of the elite pilots was born. With five new models, this range establishes itself as a high-flyer, especially the Top Gun Miramar: a tribute to the place in California.

“For the new Top Gun Pilot’s Watches we drew on our long tradition of manufacturing unusual deck watches. In the 1940s, Pilot’s Watches made in Schaffhausen were widely used as so-called B watches for flight navigation,” explains Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “Back then, only wristwatches with the highest possible precision were good enough for navigators: the pilot and his crew would synchronise their watches to the navigators.”

Since the main priority for navigation is optimum legibility of the seconds and minutes, these two were often the only indicators shown on the outer ring; the hours would be relatively small and appear on a central ring. This particular detail inspired IWC’s designers to display the hour circle and the chapter ring separately on the dials of the Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Miramar and the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Miramar.

“The process of retracing the historic roots of our Pilot’s Watches gave us the idea of using the Miramar to create our first line with a military-style design,” adds Christian Knoop, Creative Director. “That’s one of the reasons the new Miramar line is such a perfect fit for IWC:premium-class watches with outstanding mechanics and a rugged, almost hardedged feel.”

Inspired by the history of military watches, each of them boasts minute indicators on the outer ring of their military-styled dials. Their dials combine specific camouflage colours, such as beige for the hands and chapter ring, alongside with a matte anthracite surface.

Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Miramar has a cockpit-styled vertical triple date window which is situated at the 3 o’clock position, while at the same position, on the Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun Miramar’s dial, there is a 7 day power reserve indicator.
